Responsibilities of the Health and Safety Officer
Carry out risk assessments and consider how risks could be reduced.
Outline safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards.
Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
Make changes to working practices that are safe and comply with legislation.
Prepare health and safety strategies and develop internal policy.
Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks.
Maintain records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements.
Record and investigate incidents and accidents and produce statistics for managers.
Report accidents, diseases & dangerous occurrences to the enforcing authorities where required.
Ensure the safe installation of equipment.
Manage and organise the safe disposal of hazardous substances, e.g. asbestos.
Requirements of the Health and Safety Officer
Minimum of 3 year’s experience in a Health and Safety role, developing and implementing Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Experience of working in a manufacturing environment.
Specialist knowledge of technical issues relating to machinery, personal protective equipment.
Knowledge of current health and safety legislation and compliance with such legislation.
Experience of collating and analyzing data and interpretation of complex legislation.
Experience of production and presentation of reports, briefings, training to a variety of audience levels including Director.
